FAQ of Braces Wire

Orthodontic wire is mainly divided into two categories, one is NITI arch wire, the other is stainless steel wire.

These two archwires are also used at different stages of the tooth, and the use of niti arch wire follows the order from fine to thick, from round to square.

Stainless steel wire is generally used in the close tooth extraction gap, adjust the relationship between the jaw stage when the hardness of stainless steel square wire.

The teeth braces wire applies continuous force by connecting to the brackets, guiding the movement of teeth and gradually aligning them. It helps correct bite issues and shape the proper dental arch.

This ensures that teeth move efficiently and precisely during treatment, ultimately achieving the desired bite and aesthetic results.

  • Use tweezers

If an dental wire has slipped out of the molar bracket, you can use tweezers to put it back. Make sure to use clean tweezers and have an adult help you if needed.

  • Cut the wire

If the wire in braces is protruding, you can use clean nail clippers to cut it off. Pull your cheek back and slide the clippers over the wire behind the last bracket. Be sure to fish out the cut piece of wire so you don't swallow it.

  • Pull the wire forward

If the braces lock wire is poking way in the back, you can pull the entire back section straight forward to slide it out of the braces.

If a braces archwire comes loose or shifts, it might create an uncomfortable “poke” in your cheek when you’re unable to get to an orthodontist quickly.

Use a small piece of orthodontic wax rolled into a ball and place it over the tip of the wire that’s irritating you. If necessary, you can use the end of a pencil eraser or cotton q-tip to bend the tip of a wire back.

If sticky food pulls a wire out, you might be able to use a pair of tweezers to put it back until your next orthodontic appointment.

Visible shifting: The dental wire for braces may be sticking out or moving from its original position.

Discomfort: A loose dental orthodontic wire can poke the inside of your cheeks or gums, causing pain or irritation.

Difficulty eating or speaking: A misaligned wire may interfere with your usual activities.

  • Use orthodontic wax

If the dental braces wire is poking you, you can roll a small piece of orthodontic wax into a ball and flatten it over the wire. This creates a barrier between your mouth and the metal.

  • Use a pencil eraser or cotton swab

If the braces arch wire is still attached to the bracket but sticking out, you can try gently moving it back into place with a pencil eraser or cotton swab.

While you might be tempted to fix a bent wire in your braces yourself, it's best to make an appointment with your orthodontist.

Orthodontists are trained to know how to bend the wire correctly, and trying to fix it yourself could cause problems.

If a archwire in your braces comes out, you should contact your orthodontist as soon as possible.

They can assess the situation and provide guidance on how to proceed. You should not try to remove the wire yourself, as this could injure you or affect your treatment.

Swallowing a braces wire is usually not a cause for panic, as the wire will likely pass through your system safely:

  • How it happens: The human stomach and digestive tract have enough acidity to dissolve small pieces of metal within minutes.
  • How long it takes: The remaining piece will be excreted in a day or so.
  • What to do: You can eat high fiber foods like corn and bread to help the process.
  • When to seek medical attention: You should seek immediate medical attention if you experience difficulty breathing or chest pain. In extremely rare cases, you could accidentally inhale the bracket and it end up in your lungs. In this case, you should treat it immediately.
